When to Wait and When to Unstop the Toilet

4 Since ancient times no one has heard,
no ear has perceived,
no eye has seen any God besides you,
who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.

Isaiah 64:4

“Go out and get it! If you want it, take it! Go for it!”

Type A people like me can have trouble with this verse because of our list-making, go getting mentality. We think that we have to DO SOMETHING.

In this case, I take such comfort as I get on my knees and pray for my family “wait for Him.” As I pray about the goals and dreams in my own life and realize that I’m 39, “wait for him.”

As I see all of the things I do wrong, “wait for him.”

When you don’t wait
Now, one time I remember at a plant where my Dad worked a toilet was stopped up. He came in and found the plant manager praying for the toilet to get unstopped. Dad walked in, got the plunger, went to the bathroom and unstuck the toilet. He answered the prayer! Or did he.

As he said, sometimes you DO have to get up and work. This verse doesn’t imply sitting on your fanny and not taking care of today’s work.

It does, however, mean that we do wait for him as we pray over our lives. When we have those things that are our “sweating drops of blood” type prayers, sometimes we have to wait. Jesus even had to wait in the garden until his persecutors came. He didn’t run out to meet them in Jerusalem.

Sometimes we must wait upon the Lord.
